Comparison Requests
If you want to see a specific camera comparison, like the Canon R50V vs. Sony ZV-E10, ZV-E10 II, Nikon Z30, or Z50II, then let me know in the comment section. The most requested camera comparisons will be prioritized on this channel.
Body Design & Build
Canon has designed the R50V as a vlogging-centric camera. Its design closely resembles the Sony ZV-E10 and Nikon Z30. To cut production costs, Canon removed the electronic viewfinder from this model.
From a body design perspective, this camera is now ideal for vloggers—compact, lightweight, and easy to carry. You also get two different 3.5mm ports:
- One for microphone input
- One for headphone output (for audio monitoring)
Previously, Canon’s R50 did not offer a headphone jack.
Moving forward, the camera features a Micro HDMI port and a USB-C port. You can also livestream in 4K at 30fps with this camera.
New Features & Enhancements
Apart from the design, Canon has introduced some new features:
- Dedicated tally light (for recording indication)
- First-time introduction of power zoom lenses
Although I am not a big fan of variable zoom lenses, I would recommend buying the body separately and investing in prime lenses to achieve the best output.
Sensor & Image Processing
Moving on to the core features, the Canon R50V comes with a 24MP Dual Pixel CMOS sensor, the same as seen in the Canon R50 and R10.
For image processing, Canon has included its fastest DIGIC X processor. The camera records 4K 30fps oversampled from 6K, ensuring detailed and high-quality footage.
A significant upgrade in this camera is unrestricted 10-bit recording. Unlike the Canon R10 and R50, where HDR PQ recording was limited, the R50V allows full 10-bit recording. You can also use C-Log 3 for better color grading and dynamic range control.
Additionally, HLG mode and Product Showcase Mode have been introduced, a feature originally found in Sony’s ZV series. Canon was a bit late to the game, but they have finally caught up!
4K 60fps & Pricing Details
Canon has attempted to provide 4K 60fps recording in the R50V. Now, let’s discuss pricing so we can evaluate how relevant these features are.
- With the 14-30mm power zoom kit lens, the price is approximately ₹72,000 INR (~$900 USD).
- If you buy the body only, it is priced at ₹55,000 INR (~$700 USD).
Of course, launch prices are always a bit high. Once the camera starts appearing on platforms like Flipkart and Amazon, we can expect price drops in 2-3 months.
In this price range, you are getting 10-bit recording, C-Log 3, and excellent video quality. Even though 4K 60fps comes with a 1.5x crop, at least Canon has provided the option, which is something many competitors fail to offer in this budget.
Canon vs. Sony: Market Impact
Sony has a habit of releasing new cameras at higher price points. They launched the ZV-E10, then introduced the ZV-E10 II at a premium price. This left many users struggling to upgrade.
With the Canon R50V, Canon has delivered a strong counterattack. Now, it will be interesting to see whether Sony reduces the price of the ZV-E10 II or launches a new budget version (possibly ZV-E10A).
At present, no other camera brand in this price range offers 10-bit video recording with log profiles. Canon has finally stepped up its game!
Canon’s Limitations & Future Improvements
While the Canon R50V is an excellent camera, there are some limitations:
- No sensor-shift image stabilization – But expecting IBIS in this price range is unrealistic.
- 4K 60fps has a crop – However, most cameras in this segment don’t even offer 4K 60fps.
Despite these limitations, the Canon R50V is a solid choice in its price category.
Autofocus & Advanced AI Features
Canon claims that the R50V uses the same AF algorithm as the Canon R5 Mark II. They have also introduced the Registered People Priority Mode.
This feature allows you to register specific faces in the camera, ensuring that during wedding cinematography or crowded vlogging, the camera automatically tracks the registered person. If you are filming a wedding event, the camera will prioritize the bride and groom, even in a crowded scene.
Audio & Live Streaming Features
The Canon R50V supports 24-bit audio channels and offers four different live-streaming modes. This makes it a highly attractive choice for vloggers and content creators.
Final Thoughts: Should You Buy It?
Canon has packed many advanced features into the R50V, making it a very competitive camera in its price range.
Yes, the RF lens mount is restrictive, which may cause some confusion among users about which lenses to buy. However, with the strong internal specifications and aggressive pricing, Canon has forced Sony and Nikon to rethink their entry-level camera strategies.
At the end of the day, I only have two complaints:
- No IBIS (Sensor-Shift Stabilization)
- 4K 60fps has a crop
But considering the price, these limitations are understandable.
